In India, having a Driving Licence is mandatory to legally drive a motor vehicle. A Driving Licence is assigned to a person after a thorough procedure of documentation and driving tests. However, a DL comes with a limited validity of 20 years or until the DL holder crosses the age of 50 years, depending on what happens first.
You must renew your DL in order to keep on using it beyond the point of expiration. Driving a motor vehicle with an expired DL is a punishable offense under Section 177 mentioned in The Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
It is notable that you get a grace period of 30 days after the expiration of a DL. Hence, there will be no fine involved while renewing it within this grace period. Beyond this duration, you will have to pay Rs. 1,000 per year in addition to the regular fees of DL renewal.
Here are a few more reasons why you must keep your DL updated.
In case of an accident, while driving with an expired DL, you won’t be able to claim your vehicle insurance.
A DL serves as a legal document for various procedures in India, containing important information like your name, address, etc.
It can be the primary source of identification after an accident or in other situations.
