E-Invoicing Applicability and Compliance for Mumbai Businesses

With the government pushing digital compliance under GST, e-invoicing has become a key requirement for businesses across India, including those based in Mumbai. From B2B transactions to seamless GST returns, e-invoicing aims to bring transparency, reduce fraud, and automate tax reporting.

If you're a business operating in Mumbai’s trading hubs, financial districts, or industrial belts, it's time to check whether you're liable for e-invoicing and how to comply with it.

📌 What is E-Invoicing Under GST?

E-Invoicing refers to the system where B2B invoices are electronically authenticated by the GSTN (Goods and Services Tax Network) and assigned a unique Invoice Reference Number (IRN).

This doesn’t mean generating invoices on the GST portal—it means uploading key invoice data for authentication.

Once approved:

  • The invoice is digitally signed by the GST system

  • A QR code and IRN are generated

  • It becomes legally valid for tax and audit purposes

📊 Applicability of E-Invoicing for Mumbai Businesses

E-invoicing is applicable based on aggregate turnover across all GSTINs under the same PAN (all-India basis):

🧮 Aggregate Turnover📅 Effective From
₹500 Cr and above1st October 2020
₹100 Cr and above1st January 2021
₹50 Cr and above1st April 2021
₹20 Cr and above1st April 2022
₹10 Cr and above1st October 2022
₹5 Cr and above1st August 2023 (Current limit)

If your turnover in any financial year since FY 2017–18 exceeds ₹5 crore, you must comply with e-invoicing requirements.

📍 Who Must Generate E-Invoices?

✅ Registered businesses making B2B or export supplies
✅ Entities issuing credit notes/debit notes for B2B
✅ Businesses supplying to SEZ (excluding SEZ units themselves)
✅ Transporters generating e-way bills (auto-linked to e-invoice)

🚫 Not applicable to:

  • B2C invoices

  • Banks, NBFCs, insurance companies

  • GTA (Goods Transport Agencies)

  • SEZ Units

  • Government departments

  3. Generate API credentials (if using accounting software like Tally, Zoho, Busy, Marg, etc.)

  4. Integrate API or use offline tools provided by GSTN
