Procedure for Obtaining a Lift License & Its Renewal

Electrical Lift Installations in commercial, residential, office complexes, etc., (excluding the Lift covered under the Factories Act, 1948) are inspected, and licenses are issued/renewed to secure protection to the persons using the lifts and safe working of charges.
Lift License Original

The owner of the Place where the Lift is to be erected shall

1. Ensure Chief Electrical Inspector approves the Lift Erection Company to Govt.,

2. Duly fill in Form ‘A’ in consultation with the Lift Company

3. Enclose triplicate copies of drawings duly signed by the Applicant and Authorized Person of Lift Company, showing:
  1. The layout of the lift erection
  2. Plan
  3. Section Elevation
  4. Arrangement of Doors
  5. Lift well Enclosure
  6. Size and position of the machine relating to the Lift well
  7. Position of hoisting machine
  8. Number of floors to be served and total travel
4. Enclose triplicate copies of drawings duly signed by the Applicant and licensed Electrical Contractor, showing Wiring Scheme for the complete lift installation including earthling scheme

5. Enclose a copy of approval obtained from the Urban Local Body concerned for the Building Plan

6. Enclose the original treasury challan for
  1. Rs. 2500/- (Rupees Two Thousand Five Hundred only) in case of Lift having five landings;
  2. Rs. 5000/- (Rupees Five Thousand only) in case of Lift having more than five landings; (The amount should be remitted into a Govt. Treasury (E.g. State Bank of India, Beach for Chennai City Area) under this department head of account)
7. Forward the above incomplete shape to the respective Divisional Electrical Inspector

Permission in Form – ‘B’ to erect the Lift will be issued within one month if the application is in order.
Permission granted in Form – ‘B’ is valid for six months from the date it is granted.
The Permission in Form – ‘B’ can be extended further to a period of six months on receipt of application stating the reason along with original challan for
  • Rs. 2500/- (Rupees Two Thousand Five Hundred only) in case of Lift having five landings;
  • Rs. 5000/- (Rupees Five Thousand only) in case of Lift having more than five landings; (The amount should be remitted into a Govt. Treasury (Eg. State Bank of India, Beach for Chennai City Area) under this department head of account)

The fee to Apply for a Lift License

The fee charged for the inspection is as follows: –
a) Lift having a speed up to 1 mtr. Per sec. = Rs.520/-(each lift)
b) Lift having a speed up to 1.5 mtr. Per sec. = Rs. 770/-( each Lift)
c) Lift having a speed of more than 1.5 mtr. Per sec. = Rs. 1020/-(each Lift)

Documents Required for Lift License

  1. Application on a prescribed form ‘A.’
  2. The drawings of the Lift installation
  3. Attested copies of experience certificates
  4. Attested copies of Previous Certificates of Competency Class II issued by the board
  5. Original Treasury receipt
  6. The application must be signed in the Employer/ Magistrate/ Gazetted Officer/ Member of Parliament/ Member of Legislative Assembly or Municipal Councillor.
  7. One recent passport size photograph duly attested may be affixed in the Form & another should be appropriately attached along with the application.
  8. Two self-addressed stamped envelopes of size 9″ x4″

Validity of the Lift License

The lift license is valid for one year, and the renewal application has to be made three months before the expiry date.
