An Aadhaar card contains a unique 12-digit number issued to every citizen in India by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). It acts as an identification number that can be used to access the cardholder’s details, such as biometrics, contact information, among others from the government database.
Any individual, irrespective of age and gender, who is a resident of India, can enrol to obtain an Aadhaar number voluntarily. The enrolment process is free of cost. Once an individual enrols his/her details are permanently stored in the database. One person cannot have multiple Aadhaar numbers.
If you hold a PAN and are eligible to get Aadhaar or have an Aadhaar number already, then it is essential for you to inform the Income Tax Department on the same. This is why linking PAN to Aadhaar is important. If you fail to do PAN Aadhar linking, your PAN will become ‘inoperative’ after June 30, 2021.
Latest Update
The last date for linking Aadhaar with PAN has been extended from 30th June 2021 to 30th September 2021.
As per the Income Tax Department notification, income tax returns could be e-filed without linking Aadhaar and PAN till 5 August 2017. The deadline to link PAN with Aadhaar, which was initially extended from 31 August 2017 to 31 December 2017 and subsequently to 31 March 2018 followed by 30 June 2018 had been extended to 31 March 2021.
