Registration of any business entity under the GST Law implies obtaining a unique GST number from the concerned tax authority to collect tax on behalf of the government and to avail Input Tax Credit for the taxes on the inward supplies.

When GST registration for proprietorship firms is required?

GST Registration for the Proprietorship Firm can be required in the following conditions –

  1. When turnover is more than 40 lakh rupees in a year
  2. When Proprietorship Firm sell products or services interstate (from one state to another state)
  3. When Proprietorship Firm doing e-commerce business.
  4. When Proprietorship Firm wants to claim the input tax credit on the purchase.
  5. Voluntary basis

So on these above conditions, Proprietorship Firm can apply for the GST Registration.

Documents required for GST Registration of Proprietorship Firm

The following documents must be submitted by persons or entities applying for GST registration.

  1. PAN card
  2. Aadhaar card
  3. Photograph of the sole proprietor
  4. Bank account details- a copy of the cancelled cheque or bank statement
  5. Address proof of office
  1. Rented office – Rent agreement and No objection certificate (NOC) from the owner
  2. Own office – Copy of electricity bill/landline bill/water bill/municipal khata copy/ property tax receipt

Process of GST Registration of a Proprietorship Firm

Any Company, Firm or person buying or selling goods or providing services have to register themselves under Goods and Services Tax (GST) to avail the input tax credit benefits.

Registration for GST can be done online on the Goods and Services Tax website www.gst.gov.in, wherein a Temporary Reference Number (TRN) for the application is generated.

  1. Login to the GST Online Portal.
  2. Fill up Form Part-A (PAN, Mobile No., and E-mail).
  3. The Portal verifies your detail by OTP/E-mail.
  4. Upload the required documents.
  5. Access and fill in Part B using the received number.
  6. You will get the Application Reference Number.
  7. The GST Officer starts verifying your documents.
  8. The GST Officer either rejects or accepts your application within seven working days.
  9. In case of any further proofs or clarifications required, one must Provide the same.
  10. After all the clarifications, the GSTN number shall be allotted to you.
