How to surrender GST registration online?

A GST registration obtained in India can be cancelled by the registered person or by an officer, or by the legal heirs, in case of death of a person registered under GST.

GST registration cancellation is different from the GST Registration amendment. In this article, we look at the procedure for GST registration cancellation in detail.

Who Can Cancel GST Registration?

  1. An Officer under GST can either on his own accord or

  1. an application filed by the registered person or

  1. by legal heirs of the registered person. In case of the death of such a person, he can cancel a GST registration.

However, a person who obtained GST registration voluntarily cannot apply for GST Registration cancellation before the expiry of 1 year from the effective date of registration.

Possible Reasons for GST Registration Cancellation

As per Section 29 of the CGST Act, the taxpayer can initiate apply for the cancelled GST registration under the following circumstances:

  1. Discontinuance or closure of a business.

  1. Transfer of business for reasons of amalgamation, merger, de-merger, sale, lease or other pertinent reasons.

  1. Change in the constitution of business results in a change of PAN.

  1. Taxpayers who are not under the mandatory net of GST.

  1. Death of the sole proprietor.

  1. Any other reason, the likes of which must be substantiated in the application.

How to Surrender your GSTIN

A new functionality has been introduced on the GST portal for the surrendering of GST Registration. If you want to cancel your GST registration, follow below steps: 

Step 1: Login into your account on gst.gov.in

Step 2 : Go to Services >> Registration >> Application for Cancellation of Registration


There will be three tabs as under

  1. Basic Details

  1. Cancellation Details

  1. Verification


Step 3: Fill the address for future communication or select the option of Address same as above and then go to the Cancellation Details tab.


Step 4: Select the reason for cancellation and the date of cancellation. Below at, this page shows the date for which you have already filed a return.


Step 5: Go to the verification tab and verify using EVC or Digital signature, and your ARN will be generated.
