How many types of Food License are there in FOSCOS?

In India, under the Food Safety and Standards Act, food business operators must get registered with FSSAI. FSSAI issues the registration/ certificate to the applicant. Any newcomer must obtain the registration certificate before starting the new venture. The application can be made by visiting the FoSCoS website.

In this article, we will discuss the types of FSSAI registrations, the procedure to download the certificate, its importance, and other relevant information.

FSSAI Registration – Types

The FSSAI online registration is of three types. The food business operators must apply for the required FSSAI registration through the FoSCos official website. Following are the different types of registrations available under FSSAI:
  1. FSSAI Basic Registration 
  1. FSSAI State License
  2. FSSAI Central License

FSSAI Basic Registration 


The yearly turnover of the Food Business Operators (FBOs) is less than ₹12 lakh. Also, their food product production capacity is about 100 kg/litres per day should apply for a basic registration certificate. 

FSSAI State License

The FBOs whose turnover is more than ₹12 lakh but does not exceed ₹20 corers annually are termed medium-sized FBOs. These operators should apply for the State License certificate.

FSSAI Central License

The FBOs with an annual turnover of more than ₹20 corers are large-sized operators and must apply for a Central License certificate.

Issuance of FSSAI Certificate

After the application is made for the FSSAI License certificate, the concerned authorities will go through the following procedure:
  1. Confirm the jurisdiction application and the office fee receipt
  1. Scrutinize the related documents
  2. Conduct food premises inspection

When the authorities are assured, a copy of the FSSAI certificate mentioning the QR code is e-mailed to the applicant.

FSSAI License Number

The certificate has a 14-digit number which must be displayed prominently at their business address or premises and put on the packages of the food products too. The 14- digit number is divided into 5 sections. The 5 sections are mentioned below:
  1. Section 1, which includes the 1st digit, states whether the food business is allotted the license or not
  1. Section 2 contains the 2nd and the 3rd digits of the license number and indicates the code of the state where the business is registered and operational
  2. Section 3 shows the 4th and 5th digits of the license number and denotes the year the license was issued to the business
  3. Section 4 has the 6th, 7th, and 8th digits of the license and indicates the quantity of enrolling master
  4. Section 5 includes the last 6 digits of the license number, and this is the FBO’s unique license number.
